Fractional CFO Cost Calculator

Most pricing pages give you a number without telling you what it buys. Pick your stage and what you need each month, and this shows what the work costs four different ways, using prices published by named firms and checked on October 12, 2026.

How the estimate is built

The calculator converts your stage and scope into a monthly hours range, then prices those hours against four delivery models. Hours are the honest unit here, because every provider is really selling access to a finance executive for some number of hours, and the retainer that looks cheapest is often the one with the smallest allowance.

  • Bundled provider, $349 to $799 a month. Bookkeeping, tax and CFO support in one subscription. Our own Foundation plan includes about one hour of CFO support a month and Growth about three, which is the fair-use allowance the price is built on.
  • Specialist firm, $1,599 to $5,250+ a month. A dedicated fractional CFO on retainer. Zeni's CFO Lite tier is the cheapest published entry point and Pilot's Custom tier the top of the published range. Bookkeeping and tax are typically separate.
  • Independent consultant, $200 to $400 an hour. airCFO publishes $400 an hour ad hoc. The $200 end is derived rather than published: it is airCFO's $4,200 Scale tier divided by the twenty-one hours it includes. Flexible, and the only model that scales linearly with the hours you actually use.
  • Full-time CFO, $18,750 to $31,250 a month. A $180,000 to $300,000 base plus roughly 25% for payroll taxes and benefits, before any equity grant.

Questions founders ask

How much does a fractional CFO cost per month?
Published 2026 prices fall into three bands. Bundled providers that include bookkeeping and CFO support run $349 to $799 a month, but those plans include roughly one to three hours of CFO time; past the allowance the hours bill separately. Specialist fractional CFO firms run $1,599 a month at the entry tier (Zeni CFO Lite) to $5,250 a month and up (Pilot Custom), with bookkeeping and tax usually billed separately. Independent consultants charge roughly $200 an hour retained to $400 an hour ad hoc, so a typical five to ten hour month lands between $1,000 and $4,000. Prices checked October 12, 2026.
What should I actually pay for a fractional CFO?
Work backwards from hours, not from a headline price. A seed-stage company that needs a monthly close and a board pack is realistically a three to nine hour month, which is a bundled plan plus a few hours, or an entry retainer around $1,599. A Series A company running a model, a board pack and fundraise support is roughly nine to twenty-six hours, which is $1,800 to $10,400 at consultant rates or a $4,200 retainer tier that includes twenty-one hours. If a quote does not name the hours or the deliverables, it is not comparable to any other quote.
Is a fractional CFO cheaper than a full-time CFO?
Yes, by a wide margin, for any normal fractional scope. A full-time startup CFO costs $180,000 to $300,000 in base salary, plus roughly 25% in payroll taxes and benefits, plus equity, which is $18,750 to $31,250 a month before the equity, or $108 to $180 an hour across a 173-hour month. A fractional CFO at $2,500 a month is about 10% of that. On price alone the crossover sits above forty-five hours a month at top consultant rates, but the real trigger is the work becoming continuous rather than periodic, and needing someone accountable full time.
Why do fractional CFO quotes vary so much for the same company?
Because the state of the books drives the hours and most quotes never mention it. A company that has closed every month for a year needs forecasting and reporting. A company six months behind needs cleanup first, which is one-off work that can double the first quarter's cost before any CFO-level work starts. Ask any provider what they assume about your books and what happens to the price if that assumption is wrong.
What is not included in a fractional CFO retainer?
Usually bookkeeping, tax preparation and audit support, all of which are priced separately by most specialist firms. Published add-ons in 2026 include bookkeeping from $500 to $1,500 a month and tax preparation from $2,400 a year for a C-corp. A retainer that looks cheaper than another is often excluding something the other includes, so compare the total annual cost of books, tax and CFO time rather than the monthly CFO line alone.

Every price above comes from the named firm's own published pricing page, collected on October 12, 2026, with one exception that is flagged where it appears: the $200 hourly figure is derived from airCFO's monthly tier and its included hours, because airCFO publishes no retained hourly rate. Firms change pricing without notice, and several publish no prices at all. The 2026 fractional CFO cost report lists each firm, its entry and top tier, its hourly rate where stated, and what it charges separately for bookkeeping and tax.
